Eagles Galore Workshop with Christopher Dodds

2025

March 5-9, 2025

March 10-14, 2025

  • This is a specialized eagle photography tour: our primary FOCUS will be Eagles.

  • Tour groups are strictly limited to only six photographers + a leader, and a Coast Guard-certified Captain.

  • The small group size means more assistance, one-on-one guidance, and coaching for every participant.

  • Long lenses are not mandatory for this tour; 200-400mm reach is adequate for an impressive portfolio.

  • Photographers of all levels are welcome; the tour pace will suit everyone’s needs and skill level.

  • Owners of all camera brands are welcome; my 40 years of professional photography includes the last seven years as a Sony ambassador, 16 years using Canon as a Canon Northern Explorer of Light and 17 years using Nikon before that. I can help anyone with any brand improve their photography.

  • No one has spent as many days guiding Eagle workshops in Homer as I have over the years.

Join me, Christopher Dodds, in Kachemak Bay, where many of my famous Eagle images were made. This is your chance to make a truly remarkable & complete portfolio of Eagle images, dramatic fishing and flight shots, and dynamic portraits, and there is genuinely no prettier place than this for Eagles in their environment with mountains as the background.

Based in Homer, Alaska, we will be making two daily action-filled excursions (weather permitting) to photograph the Eagles; and lots of them. We will photograph Eagles in-flight, fishing, diving, fighting from land and boat, from near and far.

Our trip is timed to offer a fair mix of Alaskan weather; we hope for a fair mix of everything from sun to snow, hot and cold. I have been to Homer in March for years, and Mother Nature has never disappointed me.

Who should attend: This workshop is highly recommended for any level photographer. Whether you are entirely new to nature photography, an experienced amateur, or a seasoned pro, there will be something to photograph, and we will have plenty of time to tailor your instruction to your abilities. The seasoned pro can fully utilize the logistics, my site and subject knowledge.

What's included: Five days of in-the-field photographic instruction and an introductory slideshow/information session the evening before the workshop. Two daily boat trips (weather permitting) on each of the five days onto the picturesque Katchemack Bay, including all related expenses except crew tips, and an experienced captain in a Coast Guard Certified vessel. If the light is right and we want to stay out - we will. If the weather changes and we want to head back - we will. The idea is to bring home a portfolio of exceptional images, so we will be flexible and even try to make up for any boat time lost due to weather from one day to the next. I have been teaching Eagle workshops in Homer for years, so I know how to find many Eagles.

What's NOT Included:
Price does NOT include transportation to Homer, Alaska, meals, beverages, souvenirs or other items of a personal nature or local ground transportation during the workshop. Accommodations are not included, but I have a block of rooms reserved at a reasonable price. Rental Car is not included but is highly recommended for those who want to photograph during mid-day or during meal breaks. Ground transfer from the airport to Land's End Resort is not included.

Getting there: Our base of operations is the Land's End Resort, located at the end of the Homer Spit on the Southern Tip of the Kenai Peninsula, some 230 miles South of Anchorage (ANC). Homer (Airport Code is: HOM) is a six-hour drive in an SUV or a short flight from Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport (Airport Code: ANC)

Group size: Our group will be limited to ONLY SIX participants, with one instructor and the boat's Captain.

Details: An incredibly detailed email with the precise itinerary, hotel details, camera gear suggestions and tested clothing checklist to keep warm will be emailed after registration.

Questions: Feel free to email me at chris@chrisdoddsphoto.com or call me at +1 (514) 945-6195

What to expect:

It all begins with an Eagle. I will work tirelessly to ensure that you head home with a hard drive full of images that I would be proud to call my own.

I recently returned from Chris’s Eagle Workshop in Homer Alaska. Over the years, I have traveled extensively and can say without hesitating that this was the best trip I’ve ever been on. Chris is a very cordial but no nonsense guy. Everything about the trip was organized to the max. I’ve been photographing wildlife for 35 years and thought I had a pretty good idea about how to do it so I wasn’t expecting to learn a whole lot that was new. Wrong! Over the years, other “professionals” had encouraged me to shoot in aperture priority or auto ISO. When Chris told us he was going to teach us to set our camera exposures manually, I thought that sounded like a lot of unnecessary effort. That notion turned out to be false. If you attend this workshop and don’t already shoot in manual mode, your life will be changed. The exposures of the photos I took are spot on and better than any I have ever achieved.
In addition to the new material I learned, the “eagle shooting” was beyond anything one could ever imagine. It was both action packed and challenging. Our group was only five people and Chris bent over backward to make sure that each of us got the best photos of our lives. Even though I had substantial problems with my equipment, I now have more killer eagle photos than I could have ever hoped for. If you want an informative and fun packed trip, I encourage you to sign up for this or any of Chris’s workshops. I have signed up again for next year’s Eagle Workshop, in spite of my truck load of eagle photos, which I believe tells the whole story.”

“I love Alaska and had been dreaming of taking an Eagle photography workshop and decided to sign up with Chris. I am so glad I chose Chris for a lot of reasons. The workshop was very well organized. Chris provides the attendees with a list of suggested clothing to be sure you are comfortable in the Alaskan winter weather. He provided us with a list of suggested equipment so that we knew exactly what was needed to get the kind of photos posted on his workshop page. The group was limited to 5 attendees, so we each had ample opportunity to get feedback and suggestions from Chris. Chris is extremely knowledgable about Kachemak Bay and knows where to go to get the best shots depending on the wind and the weather, and whether there is sun or snow. Chris uses the same boat and captain for this workshop, so the captain knows exactly what Chris wants to do and how to get us into those best areas…. Chris believes in safety above all else, but snow, sleet and rain did not keep us from going out. In fact, it made for some great photos depicting the Alaskan winter eagle environment. It was an amazing trip and I got a lot of great photos and learned so much! I would definitely choose Chris for another birding workshop as he is dedicated to doing everything he can to make sure you come home with lots of amazing photographs! Thanks, Chris, for a fantastic workshop and wonderful adventure!”

“My wife and I have taken two trips with Chris Dodds, Eagles in Homer, Alaska (EAGLES GALORE), and Puffins in Quebec (PUFFINS GALORE DELUXE EDITION), and both trips have produced a portfolio of epic photos.

The first trip to photograph Eagles was well-organized: transportation was outlined, a meeting place was established, and we received suggestions as to equipment, clothing, weather, and what to expect well in advance. Chris had arranged our lodging, and upon arrival, we have a short briefing on what to expect during the course of the workshop. Transportation to the site was supplied, and to say the location and the subject was excellent is an understatement.
At times, we had forty-plus eagles overhead. Chris provided suggestions as to camera settings and provided whatever guidance was required during the shoot. Chris is very helpful and a fountain of knowledge of photography, but he doesn’t push it on you. And his head was never in the viewfinder of our cameras; he photographed, but never gave the feeling that he was on a shoot and his clients were just along for the ride.

The second trip was to Quebec to photograph Puffins. Again, the workshop was well-organized as outlined above: transportation to the site was suggested along with places to spend the previous night as we were to meet in a remote area with meager places to spend the night and dine. Boat transportation to the site was provided, and at times the puffins seemed to swarm. Chris gave us pointers on shooting small, fast-flying birds as well as the equipment necessary for closeup portrait of shy little subjects.

My wife and I have travelled all over the world, and Chris stands out among the many professional photographers we have been with. He is low key, has a good sense of humour (humour, in Canada) has a great knowledge of photography which he will share with any photographer in his groups, regardless of their experience level. We will certainly travel with Chris again.”

“I’ve long been wary about joining a workshop with a “big name” pro. I’ve heard (and witnessed) a litany of workshop horrors, ranging from egomaniac leaders to unwieldy, unhappy groups. Plus, as a professional photographer, I did not think that I would learn much from a workshop. Indeed, I teach photography and postproduction. Chris Dodds’ Eagles Galore workshop changed my mind. Although he is a supremely talented photographer, Chris is approachable and friendly, and he works tirelessly to make sure that everyone in the group has a fantastic experience. He limits the workshops to a small, manageable size. And, in spite of my I’m-a-professional-and-don’t-need-help attitude, I am a better photographer for having joined the workshop. After spending a week with Chris, my flight photography is materially improved. (Chris is an expert on the nuances of servo autofocus, for example.) Chris also taught several useful post-production techniques that I now use routinely in my workflow. The true measure of any photo trip, however, is the photos. Chris’ stated goal is for every workshop participant to go home with images that Chris would be proud to call his own. He means it. The eagle photography was fantastic. I came home with several dozen “portfolio grade” images, plus thousands of strong shots. Indeed, the single biggest complaint from my fellow workshop participants is the number of eagle shots that they had to sort through when they got home.I’ve already registered for another workshop with Chris.

“I just got back from a 10 day trip to Homer, Alaska., the place to shoot the majestic Bald Eagle. My host was Christopher Dodds and what a host he has been. He gave the 2 groups I joined a lot of field time and put us in the best positions to take epic shots every single day. There are others out there but Chris has been doing this for more than 25 years so I think it’s justified to call him the primus inter pares. A great workshop leader, excellent photographer, teacher and above all a really nice guy. If you ever consider shooting Bald Eagles and get the best for your money go see Chris , he will not disappoint you.

“I found Chris via the strong images on his web site.

Having now taken two of his photo workshops, I have seen a significant improvement in my images due to improved capture and post processing techniques. Having taken many other wildlife photo workshops, Chris stands out for his top notch instruction. His workshops provide many excellent photo opportunities.

If you are serious about your photography and want to get better, Chris can help you in many ways. He is willing and able to explain what he is doing and why he is doing it. He emphasizes not only the vision but also the execution in the field and the post processing.

It was fun shooting with and learning from Chris. I give a hearty recommendation to anyone considering a photo workshop with Chris, a recommendation I plan to follow.

This is the third trip with you and they keep getting better. Always challenging. Always easy-going. Always taking my photography forward. (Take a look at my site for a few new pictures from Alaska.) Your instruction is the best I've experience in taking these kinds of trips. You always seem to know where to put us in the absolute best place. Top Notch!!!! Can't wait till the next one.....wherever that might be. Thanks again!!!!!!!”

“Thank you so much for wonderful time we had in Homer, AK during your Eagles of Homer Workshop. Both Rick and I are so excited about learning "M" (manual). We have attended several other photo workshops lead by others but did not learn as much as we did in the 6 days under your guidance in Homer. We came home with some outstanding photos, so many more than we thought possible. We had a phenomenal time and hope to do another workshop with you in the near future.”
